This enslaved ancestor's profile has a preliminary Last Name At Birth (LNAB) until a surname can be determined. Please see the US Black Heritage Naming Conventions for Slaves before merging or changing the LNAB.
Pegg Betty is a part of US Black heritage.
Pegg was named as an adult female, held in chattel bondage by Thomas Betty, in Betty’s will dated 6 March 1798. [1]
Pegg’s age is not specified in the will. She is very likely one of the two black tithables, aged 16+, enumerated in Thomas Betty’s residence in the 1787 personal tax list of Brunswick County. [2]
Pegg may have been the wife of Toney and very likely the mother of Isaac, Anna and John.
Thomas Betty’s will stipulated that Pegg was to be sold in order to pay debt remaining on land Betty had bought of Edward Walker.
