PETITION OF JEMIMA BISBEE FOR ELISHA BISBEE'S REVOLUTIONARY WAR WIDOW'S PENSION

State of New York

County of Delaware: On this fifth day of March in the year one thousand one hundred and forty personally appeared before the subscriber first judge of the Court of Common Pleas in and for the County of Delaware, Jemima Bisbee, a resident of Meredith in the County of Delaware and State of New York, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on her oath make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by act of Congress passed July 7, 1838. That she is the widow of Elisha Bisbee who was a soldier in the revolutionary army ? That, she has understood from him and verily believes that he had served in the revolutionary army about seven years and until the close of the war ? That during his service he was in several engagements with the enemy ? That she recollects his coming home to his father's family from the army at the close of the war ? which first is impressed on her memory for the reason that one of her brothers, Jonathan, who had been in the army came home with him. That on account of this being before her marriage with the said Elisha Bisbee, her being younger than him, she does recollect with sufficient distinction to testify unto the names of the officers under whom he served or whether his service was in the line or militia, but her impression and belief is that he served in the regular line ? That when he entered the service he resided in the town of Bridgewater in the county of Plymouth in the state of Massachusetts ? That she does not recollect the date of his entering the service, but remembers the following circumstances to it: namely that an officer came from Boston on Sunday when we were at church with a request for the men to turn out to fight the British at Boston or near there ? that Elisha with several others went to Boston for that purpose and that he continued, all of the time in the service from that time until the close of the war ? that at the time of the marriage of said Jemima Allen and Elisha Bisbee, she was twenty years and he was thirty three years of age, that they then resided in Plainfield in Hampshire County in the state of Massachusetts ? that the marriage was lawfully and legally solemnized before Ebenezer Snile Esquire, a Justice of the peace at the home of Elisha Bisbee in Plainfield, in October in the year one thousand seven hundred and ninety according to her best recollection. That they moved from Plainfield to the town of Meredith in the county of Delaware and the state of New York thirty three years ago where the said Elisha Bisbee resided until the time of his decease which took place fifteen years ago last January ? that the said Jemima and Elisha had at the time of his decease seven children living the ages of the youngest being as follows at the time of the said Elisha Bisbee's decease ? that is to say Harrison Bisbee, the youngest son was aged twelve years old, and Jacob the next older fifteen years old, two of the others namely Elisha and Austin were under twenty and the remaining three were over twenty one ? that the said Jemima has not been remarried since the decease of her said husband but has remained a widow since his decease, and will swear fully appealing her pension to the judge her to award ? {and this request is herein also sent that the Commission of Pleas will refer to the rolls in the pension office for a more full accounting of the revolutionary service of the said Elisha Bisbee.
