Biography

Isabella Black was born about 1806 in North Carolina. This was the date inscribed on the marker where she is buried.[1] However, if one estimated her year of birth based on the 1850 United States Census, it would have been about 1809.[2] If one used the 1860 United States Census to derive an estimate of her birth year, it would be 1810.[3] If one used the information in the 1870 United States Census to estimate her year of birth, it would be 1804.[4] She was listed as age seventy on the 1880 United States Census which would have put her year of birth at about 1810.[5]

Isabella Black married Norman Campbell. On 17 Sep 1825 Norman Campbell and David Gillis posted a marriage bond in Cumberland County, North Carolina in the amount of 500 pounds.[6]

Isabella Black's parents were probably Duncan Black (ca. 1765 - ca. 1830) and Nancy (possibly Gallbreath.)[7] "Norman Campbell & Wife Isabella..." were mentioned among other "...heirs at law of Duncan Black Dec'd..." in a transcription of a probate document regarding the division of property of Duncan Black made on "...9th day of July 1833..." in Cumberland County, North Carolina. "...David Gillis & Wife Christian..." were also mentioned as heirs. This was perhaps the same David Gillis who, with Norman Campbell, posted the marriage bond for the marriage of Norman Campbell to Isabella Black. The probate document also mentioned Duncan Black's "...Widow Nancy Black..."[8] Further circumstantial evidence of her parents are that she named her second son Duncan Black Campbell and used Nancy as the name of one of her daughters.

Isabella Campbell was listed in the household of Norman Campbell on the 1850 United States Census for Western Division, Cumberland County, North Carolina. Ten other individuals presumed to be their children, age twenty and below were were listed with them. They were Nancy Campbell, Margaret Campbell, Neill Campbell, Emeline Campbell, Elizabeth Campbell, Mary Campbell, Catharine Campbell, Duncan Campbell, John Campbell, and Archibald Campbell.[2]

Isabella Campbell was listed in the household of Norman Campbell on the 1860 United States Census for Fayetteville, Western Division, Cumberland County, North Carolina. Nine other individuals presumed to be their children, age twenty-five and below, were listed with them. They were Margaret Campbell, Neal Campbell, Emeline Campbell, Mary Campbell, Elizabeth Campbell, Catharine Campbell, Duncan Campbell, John Campbell, and Archy Campbell.[3]

Isabella Campbell was listed in the household of Norman Campbell on the 1870 United States Census for Rockfish Township, Fayetteville Post Office, Cumberland County, North Carolina. Ten other individuals were listed with them. Though the oldest of these is forty-four, they were all presumed to be the children of Isabella and Normal Campbell. Although the eldest, Ellen, had not been mentioned on previous census records, her death certificate lists Norman Campbell and Isabella Black as her parents.[9] The children listed on the census were Ellen Campbell, Margaret Campbell, Neill Campbell, Emeline Campbell, Mary Campbell, Betsy Campbell, Kate Campbell, Duncan Campbell, John Campbell, and Archibald Campbell.[4]

Norman Campbell died in 1871, so when the 1880 United States Census for Seventy-first Township, Cumberland County, North Carolina was taken, Isabella Campbell was listed as head of household, with three of her daughters and two of her sons. They were Emiline Campbell, Betsey Campbell, Mary Campbell, John Campbell, and Archie Campbell.[5]

Isabella Black Campbell passed away on 21 May 1884 in Cumberland County, North Carolina. She was buried in Galatia Presbyterian Church, Fayetteville, Cumberland County, North Carolina.[1]
