Biography

George Curtis Blakeman was born about 1851 in Galveston, Texas. He was the son of Elijah Blakeman and Maria White. His father was the 8th generation of descendants of Rev. Adam Blakeman, early immigrant to New England and a founder of Stratford, Connecticut.

George's father Elijah Blakeman died 19 May 1856 in still undiscovered circumstances - see Space:Blakeman_Family_Mysteries. Elijah was the 8th generation of descendants of Rev. Adam Blakeman, early immigrant to New England and a founder of Stratford, Connecticut. As a child he traveled with his parents Elijah Phineas Blakeman from Connecticut to Illinois, following his uncle, Curtiss Blakeman, pioneering to settle in Illinois Territory. Capt. Curtis was one of a dozen sea captians retiring from the sea to settle land. Capt. Curtis made over 34 ocean voyages traveling as far as Canton, China; Calcutta, Valisparo; Argentia; Lima, Peru. Following in their family legacy of adventure into new territory, Elijah and two of his brothers emigated to Texas around 1840 to become first citizens of Galveston.[1]

George married Henrietta Meariman on January 27, 1877 in Houma, Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana (1814-1899 marriage records).[2] George and Henrietta had these children:

  1. Louis Reid Blakeman (1877 - 1938)
  2. Bertha Blakeman (1879 - 1879)
  3. Benjamin Henry Blakeman (1881 - 1933)[3]
  4. Julia Mariah Blakeman (Marie) (1884 - ~ 1950)[4]
  5. Ruth Juanita Blakeman (1886 - 1958)[5]

Henrietta died in 1887.[6]

George married Mary Victoria Bonner on 14 January 1889 in St. Mary, Louisiana, United States.[7] George and Victoria had these children:

  1. Fanny George Blakeman (1891-1913)[8]
  2. Lillian Blakeman (1894-1964)

In the 1860 census George (age 9), his mother, Maria (age 34), his two sisters, Fanny Blakeman (age 14), and Louisa Blakeman (age 12), his two brothers, Henry Blakeman (age 7), and Eddy Blakeman (age 5) lived next door to Maria's sister Mary Polly Dickerson (age 44) and her family. Maria was a schoolteacher at 7th Ward Thibodaux City, Lafourche, Louisiana, United States.[9]

In 1880, George (age 25), lived with his wife, Harriett (age 28). They were the parents of Lewis (age 3) and Bertha (age 1). Both George and Henrietta were enumerated as born in Louisiana. George worked on a plantation, and Henrietta was keeping house at 8th Ward, Terrebonne, Louisiana, United States.[10]

George C. Blakeman bought 163.25 acres of property on 30 August 1888.[11]

George died from stomach cancer 1894 in Charenton, Iberia Parish, Louisiana.[12]
