I was born at Bletchley on the 14th of August 1918. We were a large family: eight siblings, Mum and Dad, in a three-bedroom house. We sometimes slept three to a bed. As we all grew up we were looked after well by Mum and Dad.
I left school at fourteen and worked for the Cooperative Society of Bletchley for six months, taking milk round to the ladies. You didn’t collect any money. You were paid with a check. There were bread checks and milk checks (pre-purchased plastic tokens).
After six months I gained worked as an office boy for the London Brick Company and Forders Ltd at their Bletchley works.
My father was born the 11th of July 1880, at Haslingfield in Cambridgeshire. His name was Charles. He worked as an engine driver on the railway.
I cannot remember any of my grandparents. In fact, one on my mother’s side I would never have known. But on my father’s side, I probably saw them once at their home in Barton, near Cambridge.
