Timothy and his family are living in the 44th District in Ohio County, Virginia where he is listed as being a Hatter. This was a dangerous career and was instrumental in the phrase, "mad as a hatter". The person making the hat would use a method called carroting which used mercuric nitrate to to turn fur into felt. This process created an environment where the Hatter would end up breathing in highly toxic metal. The exposure to mercury vapor created symptoms such as slurred speech, tremors, and other neurological symptoms. The United States would not stop using this process till WWII in 1941. Timothy made sure his children attended school and received an education.
