Biography

In Daniel's pension application he states he was born somewhere north of New York in the year 1764.

MILITARY

1871 New York - Rev War; NY Militia & Contl Troops; Private - began as a substitute; Commanded by Captian Morris and Sargented by Sanford; Served in Gen Heath's Brigade commanded by Col Swift & Sargented by Knapp at York Island; total tour of duty = 18 months

1783 New Jersey - Rev War; Privateer on Brigantine Martial commanded by Captain Noah Scovil; patrolled West Indies trade route in search of British cargo ships; assisted in the capture of British cargo ship, Brigantine Hope; served 2 months of 3 month committed tour.

  • Daniel applied for an received his pension for having served in the Revolutionary War as a Private in New York, His pension was to start on 27 Jul 1868 and is recorded in Vol 5 Page 72. His name is recorded on the Roll of Pensioners under at 8 Feb 1858, page 156, Vol H. The pension was issued 20 Dec 1833 and sent to
  • Daniel also applied for and received a pension from Pennsylvania for his revolutionary service as a Private serving under Captain Morris who was serving under Col Swift in New York for 18 months. Application 25710 dated 7 Jun 1832. According to this certificate he was to receive $180.

Daniel's widow, Martha, applied for and received a Certificate of Pension for Daniel's service dated 5 Oct 1868. The pension was in the amount of 96.00.

Pension Application Declaration

Daniel provides the following testimony to receive his pension for service rendered during the Revolutionary War.

State of Pennsylvania, Westmoreland County
On 20 November 1833 Daniel appeared personally in open court before the judges of the court of Common Pleas for Westmoreland County, now sitting, Daniel Bliss, a resident of Donegal Township, in the County of Westmoreland and the state of Pennsylvania, aged sixty nine years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to attain the benefits of the act of congress passed June 7th 1832.
Entered the service of the United States as a substitute in the year 1780 or 81 in a Compnay of Militia commanded by Captain Morris our Sargeants name was Sanford. We marched from a place called Fisk tall
