Henry S. Bonine was born on 27 November1863 at his parents' home in Lancaster City, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, USA. He was the 2nd son of Robert Atkinson Bonine and Matilda (Hollinger) Bonine. Robert and Matilda were married on 25 October 1860 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Afterwards, they remained in Lancaster for a few years, probably until the end of the US Civil War, then moved west to Altoona, Blair County, Pennsylvania, where they would live the rest of their lives. Robert A. "R. A." Bonine became a well-known pioneer professional photographer with studios in Altoona and nearby Tyrone, Pennsylvania.[1]
The Bonine family has not been found on the 1870 US Census (probably due to misspelling of "Bonine," common on old Census reports) but the 1 June 1880 US Census recorded "Henry Bonine" as 16 years old, living with his parents and 6 siblings, in Altoona, Blair, Pennsylvania. Henry, along with 2 of his brothers, listed "Assisting Father..." as their occupation, indicating that the Bonine Photography Studio was a family affair. At least 2 of the 4 Bonine brothers, not including Harry S. Bonine, went on to be photographers. Harry Bonine learned the plumbing business; owning a plumbing shop in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, in the late 19th Century.[2]
The 1890 US Census lists were accidentally destroyed and not publicly available. It is known however, from later records, that Henry (Harry) S. Bonine married Elizabeth E. Hanaway about 1888. She was born on 10 May 1871 in Pennsylvania, daughter of Henry Hanaway, b: 1840 in Scotland, and his wife Margaret (Traynor) Hanaway, b: 1842 in Scotland. Harry & Elizabeth Bonine had one son: Harry E. Bonine, born on 21 September 1891 in Pennsylvania. The family was recorded on the 1910 US Census, living in Ward 1, city of Duquesne, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Harry Bonine was listed as a "Plumber, owns shop." Elizabeth Bonine stated she had had one child (son, Harry) and he was alive in 1910. Living with them was Elizabeth Bonine's married sister, Catherine (Hanaway) Creamer [sic=Cramer], born ca. 1880, married, no children. For some unknown reason, they all stated that their parents were born in Germany [sic = Harry's parents were from Pennsylvania; Elizabeth's parents were from Scotland].[3]

The 1 April 1930 US Census recorded them living in their own home, valued at $4,000 US dollars, on Filbert Road, Alderwood Manor, Snohomish Co., Washington, USA. Harry S. Bonine stated he was a "General Farmer". He indicated he had been married since 1888. Born in Pennsylvania, he now stated his parents were also born in Pennsylvania. Elizabeth, born in Pennsylvania, now stated (correctly) that her parents were immigrants from Scotland.[4]

(Rhoades) Bonine, 38 years old. They had been married since 1920. The couple were living in their own home, valued at $20,000 US dollars. They were sharing their residence with Margaret's father, Sylvester B. Rhoades, a 76-year-old widower. All three members of the household declared they were born in Pennsylvania and that their parents were also born in Pennsylvania. Harry E. Bonine said he owned a "Poultry Ranch," one of several listed for that locale. [5] Harry and Margaret (Rhoades) Bonine had no known children.
Ten years later, the 1 April 1940 US Census, the most-recent publicly-available, recorded Harry S. Bonine and his wife, Elizabeth E. Bonine, as still living in Alderwood Manor, Snohomish County, Washington, USA. They were now joined by their son, Harry E. Bonine, who had been divorced during the 1930s. The three of them were living in their same home on Filbert Road as in 1930: [6] [7]
