Lester Bowie was a jazz trumpet player and composer. He was a cofounder of the Art Ensemble of Chicago and the Black Artists Group (BAG) in St. Louis. In addition to his own group, he performed with numerous other artists and was also a studio musician, playing the opening theme music for TV's "The Cosby Show". In 2000 he was inducted into the Down Beat Jazz Hall of Fame [1]
Lester was born in 1941 in Frederick, Maryland. He was raised in St. Louis, Missouri. [2] In 1950 he was living with his parents William and Earrie and a brother in St Louis. [3]
He married notable soul-singer and songwriter Fontella Bass in 1965. [2][1]
He had been married to second wife Deborah for 20 years when he passed away in 1999 at his home in Brooklyn, New York. [2][4][1]
