Harold Breazeale was on born 28 May 1920 in Pickens County to Ed and Doshia Breazeale. He attended the University of South Carolina and was a member of the Clariosphic Literary Society [1]. On 17 Aug 1941, he married Evelyn Winchester. They had five children. He enlisted in the Army in 1943, his occupation was listed as farm hand [2].
Legislative Career
Harold Breazeale served in the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1955 until 1974 and served as the chairman of the Education and Public Works Committee. He advocated for increased state funding of public education and was instrumental in bringing state-funded kindergartens to South Carolina. His career spanned the shifting of Democrats and Republicans in South Carolina. He supported the Senate campaign of then Democrat Strom Thurmond in 1954. Strom Thurmond changed his part affiliation to the Republican party in 1964. Harold was defeated in the 1974 General Election by Republican Edward W. Simpson, Jr, a year that saw the first Republican governor of South Carolina since Reconstruction[3].
Death
Harold Breazeale died in a car wreck on 20 December, 1994. He is buried at Secona Baptist Church, where he was a long time member.
