Horace was born in 1924. He grew up working on his father Sheriff’s farm, and it stands to reason he likely helped out on his grandfather George’s farm as well. He attended both D.W. Daniel and Pickens High School, but I don’t believe he graduated from either. If he did, I’ll come back and update the bio. He lost sight in one eye as a result of a childhood bout with the mumps. This would lead to keeping him stateside during World War II, however, he did serve in the U.S. Army Air Forces during the war, rising to the rank of corporal. After the war and his honorable discharge, he would marry Viriginia King and father five children. He worked for a company called Singer, retiring after 32 years as one of their most well-regarded employees. He was a member of Arial Baptist Church in Arial, South Carolina, and served in a variety of leadership positions in the church over the years. He was a sports fan and enjoyed cheering for the Atlanta Braves baseball team in his free time. He passed away in 2015 at the age of 90. [1]
