Bayles (Bailey) Breese Birth 25 Apr 1782? in Basking Ridge, Somerset, New Jersey, USA Death 29 Jan 1859 in Paw Paw, DeKalb County,,Illinois,USA

Parents: Stephen Breese (1755 – 1833) and Nancy Bailey/Bayles? (1763 – 1840) *** Nancy's maiden name was either Bailey or Bayles. ***

Bayles was his name at birth but he was always called "Bailey". Bailey Breese was born during the American Revolutionary War and died on the eve of the Civil War. Bailey's father Stephen was a farmer as well as a soldier during the Revolutionary War. Stephen and Nancy lived at the house of Stephen's parents, John Breese and Dorothy Riggs even after having children, possibly even until his parents died. So Bailey Breese grew up in his grandparents' household on the farm. He was the 3rd of 11 children born to Stephen & Nancy Breese but he was the only son with 10 sisters.

History: 1783 - The Treaty of Paris ends the American Revolutionary War (September 3)

History: 1789 - George Washington is inaugurated as President in New York

History: 1804 - Lewis and Clark set out

16 Sep 1804 - Marriage to Deborah Irwin/Erwin/Arwine in Basking Ridge, Somerset County, New Jersey. Bailey and Deborah are both 22 years old. A year after their marriage, Deborah gives birth to a son, Stephen, on 30 Sep 1805. Next, they had a second son, Bailey Breese Jr, named after his father. Deborah dies the following year in August 1809 leaving a four year-old and an 18-month-old baby in the care of her husband. Given the age of the second child, we could guess Deborah died as a result of a 3rd pregnancy or childbirth (but this is just speculation).

11 Sep 1809 - Second marriage to Phebe Runyon in Bernardsville, Morris County, New Jersey. Bailey quickly remarried, probably to ensure that his toddler son had a mother. Bailey was 27 and Phebe was 25. We believe this was a first marriage for Phebe. Vincent and Phebe were married for 33 years until her death in 1842. They had eight children:

Deborah Brees 1810 – 1864 Mary Breese 1812 – 1845 Vincent Runyon Breese 1814 – 1894 [my ancestor] Ann Breese 1817 – 1888 Elizabeth Breese 1820 – 1881 James Harris Brees 1822 – 1876 Andrew Bray Breese 1824 – 1891 Phebe Breese 1832 – 1888 [was born 8 years after previous sibling]

1830 US Census: Bailey Breese is 48 and listed as head of household, one woman [Phebe] age 40-50 and 8 children, 3 boys and 5 girls. At this time, the oldest sons, Stephen Breese would be 24 and Bailey Breese Jr would be 22 yrs old. Bailey had recently (1829) married Sarah Whitneck and was no longer living at home. The only thing inconsistent about this record is that the youngest daughter, Phebe Breese wasn't born until 1832 so there should be only 4 daughters in the household. Residence: Somerset County, New Jersey.

1840 - Bailey Breese left Morristown, New Jersey in the fall of 1840 to buy land in Paw Paw, Illinois.

According to an account in History of Lee County By H.H. Hill and Company "Mr. Breese was a speculator in real estate in the east, a man of fine education, public spirited, and very influential in shaping affaire at the grove." It goes on to say "Mr. Breese was a cousin to Sidney Breese, once senator from this state, and afterward member of the supreme bench. "With a robust constitution, not a gray hair, not a tooth missing, and eyesight unimpaired, he was a type of health. He was an active business man all his life, and his public-spirited usefulness raised his character and memory high in popular judgment."

May 1841 - Bailey Breese brings his family to settle in Paw Paw, DeKalb County, Illinois including some of his adult and young children. They are considered to be among the founders of this town and county.

1 Apr 1842 - Death of wife Phebe Runyon (Breese) at age 58. Her youngest child, daughter Phebe was at the time 10 years old but the other children were 18 or older. [No information about the cause of her death.]

History: 1846 - The US-Mexican War begins

1850 US Census: Bailey Breese is living with Clarissa Hampton and her children but he is not listed as head of household or even as her spouse. He is listed last. The census was taken on Sept 30 and Bailey was not yet married to Clarissa until Dec 21 of that year. Residence: town of Wyoming, Lee County, Illinois.

21 Dec 1850 - Third Marriage to Clarissa McCarty Hampton in Paw Paw, DeKalb, Illinois. Bailey Breese is now 68 and Clarissa is only 50, a widow and has 4 teenage or adult children living with her from her previous marriage to James Hampton who died in 1846. According to the census record earlier in the year Bailey & Clarissa were living in Wyoming, Lee County but their marriage is recorded in Paw Paw, DeKalb County. 1855 Illinois State Census: Bailey Breese is now 73, living in Wyoming, Lee County, Illinois. This record names only the head of household but indicates that he is living with a woman age 50-60 and a girl age 10-20.
