Elizabeth Bregmen was born in about 1854. Her date of birth is not confirmed as no birth record has been located. However this is not surprising as she is said to have been the first white child born in the Waiuku District, and at that time there was no official birth record system in the area.
It is understood that she was one of the children of George and Catherine Bregmen (nee Sheppard) who had emigrated to New Zealand from England, travelling via Australia. They are believed to have arrived in New Zealand in 1840. George Bregmen (sometimes spelled Bregman) was reported to be one of the first settlers in Waiuku.
It is known that George and Catherine Bregmen, said to be her parents, lived in the Waiuku area. They are buried in Waiuku Cemetery (which has been verified by a site visit).
Elizabeth married Alfred John Barriball, a Waiuku farmer. The Barriball's (Alfred's parents) were known to be very active Wesleyan Methodists in the area and had a property called Eden Grove. The wedding between Elizabeth and Alfred is believed to have taken place in Waiuku and Elizabeth aged 32 and Alfred 28. The marriage index gives Elizabeth's family name as Bregmer (likely to be a transcription error).
Elizabeth and Alfred had three children:
Elizabeth died aged about 48 after a painful illness and is buried in Waiuku Cemetery. A surname variation exists on the death index source at Ancestry.com - Barreball instead of Barriball. At BDM Online the spelling is Barriball (see death registration no. 1902/4311).
Her funeral was on 24 August 1902 and the chief mourners were her husband A J Barriball, her son Cyril Barriball and two brothers, named as George and Arthur Bregman in the New Zealand Herald account on 27 August, 1902.
Her husband Alfred, published thanks to wellwishers after his bereavement in the NEW ZEALAND HERALD, VOLUME XXXIX, ISSUE 12066, 9 SEPTEMBER 1902. [1]
The Council database (see Manukau Memorial Gardens Genealogy Search) which includes Waiuku burials shows Elizabeth Shepherd Barriball buried on 1 January 1903, however this date shows for multiple burials, and it is believed the council records are not specific as to date. The location of her grave is at WUGRV-14-012. [2]
