Biography

Herman was the son of Wilhelm Brietzke of Germany. The reason there is no source for the birth registration of Herman Paul Brietzke, is because where he was born in Pommern, Prussia, the records have not been released. The German and Prussia WT groups explained that the village he was born in now is in Poland. After the war, the country of Prussia was divided up and destroyed. Each Church is private and they have to join a group which will allow the group to come in and digitalize the records. This has not been done, as of 2021. The earliest record will be used.

Herman first married Fredericka Wilhelmina Van Suckow.(1854-1892). Her name was listed on her daughter Wilhelmine's (Minnie's) death record.[1]

Children(8):

  1. Annie
  2. Paul Frederick, b. 1883; lived in Alberta in 1950
  3. Gustav Herman, b.1885-d.1954 imgrtd to Canada in 1912, lived in Alberta in 1950
  4. Bertha
  5. Ida, b.1888
  6. Emma
  7. Wilhelmine, b.1889-1950; married Carl Reinmuth, Yakima, Washington, USA. On her death certificate Fredericka Suckow was stated to be her mother. She was adopted by Anne Berlinke and Carl Menge as per the 1900 Census in her profile. [2]
  8. William, b.??; lived in North Dakota in 1950[3]

After Fredericka's death in 1892 he relinquished at least one child, his daughter Wilhelmine "Minnie" to the care of Anne Berlinke and Carl Menge.

Herman secondly married the 17 year old Ida Irene Jacobs (1876-1953) in 1893.,[4]

Children:

  1. Alexander Brietzke, b. Mar 1893 in South Dakota
  2. Herman Henry Brietzke aka Nightingale b.22 Sep 1894 in Moyer Twp, Swift County, Minnesota. He was out living on his own boarding with another family at age 15. He served in the Mexican/American War in 1916. Sometime afterward he went to live with his mother Ida and her husband Richard Nightingale. He married Bessie Abbott in 1923. Of their children only one lived past age two. Robert Henry. Herman Henry left his family when his son Robert was only 6. He died while working of the Hoover Dam on 22 Apr 1932. [5]
  3. Arthur Nightingale or H, Brietzke aka Nightingale, b. Jan 1896 in Minnesota and passed away 24 Jan 1968 in Towner, North Dakota.

The family was found in the 1900 US Federal Census in Townships 151-152-Ranges 75-80, McHenry, North Dakota[6]The household was enumerated as follows:

  • Harris[sic] Herman Brietzke Head Male 34[sic] 45 Germany

Herman and Ida divorced and she left with their third baby in utero.[7] Ida remarried Dr. Robert D. Nightingale.[8]She left her older two boys to be raised by Herman's older children.

Thirdly, Herman married Katharine Lydia Hoff (relict Allwin) of Russia, after 1900 and before 1910. Katharine was already a mother to Lydia Allwin and John Allwin.

The reason we know the children were Katharine's before marriage is because Herman's son Paul filled out an immigration record for his visit to his "step brother" John Alvin.[9]

The family was found in the 1910 US Federal Census in Berlin, Sheridan, North Dakota[10] The household was enumerated as follows:

  • Herman Brietzke Head Male 55 Germany

According to the Provincial Death Archives for Alberta, Herman P. Brietzke from Big Stone, passed away in Alberta in 1916, depicted by the letter "T". [11]

Herman Paul has a memorial in the Youngstown Cemetery, Youngstown, Hanna Census Division, Alberta, Canada. The village of Big Stone is south of Youngstown, Alberta. His body, however was removed to Minnesota for interring.[12]
