Biography

Please see http://www.momslookups.com/generations/brinegar.html for more information on this family.

Adam Brinegar[1], [2] is thought to be the child who arrived in 1731 on the Britannia from Rotterdam, age 5, with Veith and Barbara Bruninger.[3] [4]

Strassburger lists two children named Hans Adam Bruninger, one age 5 and the other age 1. I suspect that these are a duplication of the same child. Whether or not this is the case, if one of them is the Adam Brinegar who later came to Rowan County, then he was probably closer to age 5 than 1 in 1731, as evidence indicates that his older children were born in the mid-1740s.

Nobody seems to have any proof that this is the same Adam Brinegar, nor any information on where the family was between this immigration and his appearance in Rowan County NC as a young man, but it seems to be a likely match.

There are some Brinegars in Augusta Co. VA[5]

His will was signed 4 Jun 1766, probated January court 1767[6]

An Adam Brinegar is listed as a taxpayer in Rowan County NC in 1759 and 1768[7]; in view of the date of the actual will and probate, the 1768 record must refer to his son Adam.

The will names wife Elizabeth and the estate settlement papers show that she survived him. Many family trees on line, including the profile for Adam at familysearch.org linked here, identify her as Elizabeth McGance, and some say she was born in Germany in 1726, , with marriage in 1744 in Rowan County NC. Rowan County didn't exist yet in 1744, so no marriage can have been recorded there. Despite a pretty thorough search of the Rowan County NC records, I have found no evidence that her surname was McGance, and I suspect this is a confusion with some other marriage record. Can anyone supply real documentation? [Elizabeth Harris, 7 December 2013, updated 15 February 2018]
