Biography

William Mannering Brookshire works... I have his father James as a Junior.

William Brookshire was born around 1730 to James Brookshire in Dorchester County, Maryland[1] No recording of his death has been found to date. While some sources indicate he died around 1779 in Rowan, North Carolina,[1] he is named in the will of James Burk, as James' son-in-law, which would mean he was still alive in 1782. [2] To add to the discussion, the memorial at Find a Grave has two dates, 8 Aug 1779 and before August 8, 1786[3]

No indication of a "middle name" found in any reference to him, except on Find a Grave.

Residence

1759
Guilford, NC[4]
bef 1763
Rowan, NC acquired land via land grant [5]

Marriage

There are many researchers who assert that William's wife was Honour Burk:[6]
Born: Abt 1732, Virginia or North Carolina, USA
Marriage: William Brookshire Sr. in 1750 in North Carolina, USA
Died: 1789, Rowan or Randolph County, North Carolina, USA about age 57 if this date is true, then why is she not named in her father's will in 1782?
Buried: Rowan County, North Carolina, USA.

However, there is no compelling proof regarding this woman. No parents or siblings for her, nor any type of official record, such as marriage, probate, etc.

There is some evidence, however, that a woman named Honour Burk was married to man named William Brookshire; her father's will refers to a son-in-law named William Brookshire.

Therefore, the conclusion, at this time, is that Honour Burk is William's wife.

Research Notes

Two sites have been working to "discover" the truth on this lineage, for updates and additional information, please see

  1. Tonia's Roots
  2. Planer Murphy

There is a probate record in 1788 for Rowan, NC that appears to indicate a wife named Sarah and the death of her husband William Brookshire, this may be another generation of Brookshires, but needs investigation.[7]

William was born in 1730. He passed away in 1779.

Mannering was born about 1732. He passed away in 1786. [8]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:

I have added all of the sources that appear to be "thoughtful" in nature, there is still a lot of work to be done on this family. Thank you for allowing me to help.

This man was my 4th GGF and married ONCE! He was b 1730 d 1786. Honor Burke was

b 1732 d 1789. There was no divorce! Again it appears that we have skipped a generation in this line: should be: William Mannering, William, James, James, Nathan, etc

Brookshire-313 and Brookshire-104 appear to represent the same person because: same first name (as noted in profile), last name, birth year, death location, death year, same spouse.
