Biography

Emma Sarah Brown was born at Wakefield, south of Nelson, in New Zealand on November 1st, 1870. She was the youngest of six children born to Thomas Brown and Elizabeth Betsy Wadsworth. [1]

Emma Sarah Brown married, at age 21, to William Arthur Verry.
They were married in the home of Mrs Brown, (Emma’s mother) in Wakefield, Nelson, on September 30th, 1891. Their witnesses were Eva Christmas Smith and George Brown (Emma’s brother).
William and Emma’s intention to marry was recorded a week prior, on the 22nd of September 1891, by the Wakefield Post Office Registrar. William’s given age, 24 and Emma, 21. [2]

Further details can be gleaned from the announcement of their Golden Wedding on September 1941, as noted in the New Zealand Herald: [3]

Golden Wedding
"VERRY – BROWN. On September 30, 1891, at Wai-iti, Nelson, by the Rev. Edward Lewis, William Arthur, eldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs G. VERRY, Pahiatua, to Emma, youngest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. T. BROWN, Wai-iti. – Present address: 3 Wesley Avenue. Mount Albert."

It appears that shortly after their marriage in 1891, William and Emma moved to the North Island. They were shown living at Makakahi (South West of Ekatahuna) in the 1896 Electoral roll where William’s parents, George and Martha Verry had moved to in about 1880. William's father George had set up a butter creamery.

William was a dairyman and farmer. He worked and lived at a range of places in the North Island including Tutaekare, Makakahi, Konini, Eketahahuna, Masterton, Feilding, Palmerston North and later Mt Roskill in Auckland.

By May 1908, Emma, age 37, and William, age 40, had completed their family with their fourth child.

Research Notes

Notes of Nola (Holyoake) Moses at 6 Apr 2015:
Emma was born in 1871. Some genealogy sites state Emma's father was Thomas Edward Brown. This was not the right Thomas , as Thomas Edward Brown was born in 1860! I'm pretty sure the right Thomas is listed here as her father.( Needs further research.)
