Abel Brown was born in Ohio in 1801.

He married 3 times:

About 1823, he married Sarah "Sally" Knowlton (1802-1858). They had the following children:

  1. Mahala (1824-1899) m George W. Ice
  2. Dorcas (1829-1896) m Peter Noffsinger Cline
  3. Isaac
  4. Wesley (1837-1916) m Darothy Powell; m Nancy Overall

  6. Rachel Ann (1849-1888) m John Williams (1845-1920); 12 children

After 1858, Abel remarried to Abigail Unknown (1804-1870)

In 1872, Abel Brown married Lucinda Powell (1820-1895), widow of Milton Cotton (1815-1859) Lucinda remarried to George Carrey after Abel died in 1882.

1850 US census shows Able Brown 49y (born in Ohio) as head of household located in Washington Township, Monroe, Ohio. He is a farmer who owns 300 acres. Wife Sarah 48y (born in Ohio), Wstley 14y, William 12y.[1]

1870 US census shows Abe Brown 70y (born in Ohio) living in the household of John Williams, 22y, his wife Rachel 21, Sarah C 4y, James S 2y. Brown owns the land, which is 600 acres.

Living on the adjacent farm is Westley J Ice 20y, and his wife Sarah 18y. John Westley Ice is a son of John Ice and a grandson of George Washington Ice, Sr. (1767-1825). Also living in that household are Henry Blair 23y, farm laborer, and Abigail Brown 66y, who is "living with her daughter."[2] This suggests that Sarah's family name was Brown--that is, Sarah Brown born in Ohio about 1852, daughter of Abigail (Unknown) Brown born about 1804.

1880 US census shows Abel Brown 79y farmer (born in Ohio) as head of household located in Hammond, Spencer, Indiana. Wife Lucindia (born in Indiana) 63y, Daughter-in-law Elizabeth Cotton 19y. The father of Abel Brown was born in Maryland, and his mother was born in Pennsylvania. The father of Lucinda was born in Indiana, and her mother was born in Kentucky.[3]

Find-a-Grave says that he was not born in Virginia but rather Washington County Ohio. Was the VA birth location listed on a census or death certificate?
