Biography

Alice Louisa Bruce was born on September 2, 1893 in Halstead, Essex, England. The Bruce family's main occupation had been as bricklayers, however her father became a taxi driver. Cornelius Bruce (1835-1873) her grandfather had died in a work accident while bricklaying. I had wondered how she met Arthur Lock but sometime before 1911 she obtain a servant job in the household of Samuel Thomas Gaved (1842-1932). Mr. Gaved's house was in the village of Shepperton. As it so happened Arthur Lock and his family also lived in Shepperton. So they met sometime between 1911 and 1915. She married Arthur Lock on October 23, 1915 in West Ham, Essex, England. My father was born in 1916. I am not sure how many jobs she may have had between my father's birth and 1940. But in 1940 she was working at the Vicker-Armstrong factory (an aircraft factory) when it was bombed. She was injured. Her husband's brother in law William Robert Pearson (1904-1940) was killed. For almost all of her life her sister Ada Elizabeth (Bruce) Lock (1898-1976) lived nearby. She did visit us in Upstate New York around 1964. She died on September 2, 1967 in Walton on Thames, Surrey, England.
