Biography

  • Marianne arrived in Australia on 18th September, 1853 with her sister, Eliza, on "Telegraph"
  • An Obituary from an unknown paper dated 29th December, 1905 reads:
  • "Death of Mrs. Martin
  • The Grim Reaper visits in his own good time, the home of the King and his subject. No one is exempt from the touch of his chilly hand, and as the slender thread of life is snapped the kindly acts of a woman like Mrs. Thomas Martin, senr., who died at Martin Vale, Westbrook, on Wednesday, are remembered.
  • In life the deceased woman was an ornament to her sex, and did her best to follow the teaching of her Divine Master. No traveller in need passed the good lady's door with the iron of anger in his heart, but went on his way rejoicing with no fear of the pangs of hunger attacking him on the road.

These are the acts of Christian charity that speak from heart to heart, and shame outward show. Not only the members of her family, but a large circle of friends and relatives keenly felt their loss although the end was not unlooked for, Mrs. Martin having reached the advanced age of 71 years. Old age and an internal complaint took the old lady to her just reward on Wednesday morning, the following members of her family being present; Messrs. John, Henry, Thomas and William Martin, and Mrs. W.W. Cowley, Glendonbrook; Mrs. A.R. Taylor, Stanhope; Mrs. H. Meissner, Corinda; Mrs. W. Taylor, Stanhope; and Miss Martin, Westbrook.

  • The funeral took place yesterday, the remains being first conveyed to All Saint's Church, where the Rev. Stacy Waddy make sympathetic reference to the many virtues of the deceased lady, and afterwards to the Church of England Cemetery at Whittingham.
  • At the graveside the Rev. Gentleman again spoke in feeling terms of the deceased lady. The funeral was largely attended by a very representative gathering as a mark of sincere respect and esteem to the deceased and her family.
  • The husband of Mrs. Martin predeceased her in September, 1900, at the age of 71. We offer our sympathy to the relatives of the deceased lady in their sad trouble.
  • The funeral arrangements Were ably carried out by Mr. George E. Broomfield".
  • She is buried at Whittingham Cemetery Row 20 Grave 812A.
