Biography

1776 Project
Caleb Bryant performed Patriotic Service in Massachusetts in the American Revolution.
Caleb was a housewright.

Military

Sergeant, Capt. William Shaw's (1st Middleborough) co. of Minute Men, which marched on the alarm of April 19, 1775, to Marshfield; service 3 days; also, Lieut. Jonah Washburn's co., Col. Ebenezer Sprout's regt; marched to Rhode Island on the alarm of December 8, 1776; service, 11 days.[1]

Probate

Caleb Bryant of Middleborough, housewright died intestate and on 6 July 1778, Capt. William Shaw of Middleborough was granted the administration of his estate.[4]

His inventory was taken on 24 July 1778 in Middleborough.[5]

In 1794, an account of his estate by William Shaw was recorded which included debts paid, and administration fees.[6]

In 1797, a second account of his estate by William Shaw was recorded which included the balance from the prior account, debts paid, support to the widow and children, and administration fees.[7]

In 1797-8 and recorded in 1802, it was found that the real estate of Caleb Bryant could not be divided without spoiling the whole, so it was settled upon his only son Seth, who agreed to pay his sister Lucy, wife of Ephraim Vaughn her share. His widow Hannah also received her dower.[8]
