Biography

John Farquard Buchan IV was born on 26 September 1837 in Pulaski, Candler, Georgia, the son of John Farquard Buchan III and Artha A. Sermon. The 1850 United States Census for Pulaski, Georgia shows John, 13, living with his parents, John, 33, and Artha, 33, and five siblings: James, 11, Nancy, 8, William, 5, Caty, 3, and Richard, 1.

The family moved to Texas some time before 1861. John married Mary J. Malone on 25 September, 1861 in Harrison, Texas. They had at least one child, Johnie Ann, as known from her death certificate.

John Buchan, identified in some records as J. F. Buchan, served as an officer in the 14th (Clark's) Regiment, Texas Infantry, during the Civil War, entering service as a 2nd Lt. and ending as a Captain. Records available mostly consist of routine requisitions for clothing, signed by Captain J F Buchan. These records also list John's brother, James, identified usually as "J E Buchan", leading to possible confusion. James was briefly a prisoner of war.

Similarly, the land and tax records in Harrison County can be confusing since John's father is also John and both of them were in the same county.

John died on 9 April 1864 in Louisiana.

Is there a source anywhere that gives his middle name as Forkwood?
