Biography

Cadet and officer until 1919. Erich was twice wounded in World War I, the second time seriously, and was awarded the Iron Cross, First and Second Class for his service.[1][2]

Took over the Gross Trampken estate on the death of his father, paying his brothers Karl and Gerhard for their share of the inheritance.

A member of the conservative German National People's Party (DNVP), Erich was elected (16 May 1920) to the Constituent Assembly for the Free City of Danzig, which had been set up under the terms of the Treaty of Versailles. Erich was one of 17 members of the Assembly chosen to write a constitution for the Free City. The constitution they developed was approved by the Assembly on August 11, 1920. After several amendments recommended by the League of Nations, it took effect in December of the same year. The Constituent Assembly became the first Volkstag (parliament) for the Free City of Danzig.[3]

Erich was elected four times to the Volkstag, serving from 1920 to 1933 (his first term incomplete).[4] The violent election of 1933 gave the NSDAP (Nazi Party) a slim majority and marked the end of democracy in Danzig, as well as of Erich's service in the Volkstag.

During the 1930s Erich was a director of several banks. He was co-chairman of the board of Danziger Raiffeisenbank e. G. m. b. H[5] and a member of the supervisory board of Danziger Hypothekenbank A.-G.[6][7][8]

He was an officer in the Danzig militia and then the German army during World War II. His final rank was Oberst (Colonel). Captured by the Americans, he was held at Camp Crossville, Crossville, TN.[9]

The Gross Trampken estate was seized by the Soviets in 1945. Erich settled in the village of Greuelsiefen, near Hennef (Sieg) in North Rhine-Westphalia. He died on 16 Oct 1962 at the age of 71 and is buried at Friedhof Hennef-Warth in Hennef (Sieg).[10]
