Biography

Jesse was born about 1816. He was the son of James Burgin and Leah Burgin. He passed away before 1887.

In 1850 Jesse was 34 years old and enumerated in his parents household in McDowell County, North Carolina. Jesse was working as a farmer. ^[1]

Jesse married Mary Druscilla Smith on January 30, 1854 in McDowell County, North Carolina.^[2][3][4]

Jesse and Mary (appears to be enumerated as Amy) in 1860 were living in Black Mountain, McDowell County, North Carolina. Jesse was 45 years old and working as a farmer. Jesse and Mary have one daughter, Henrietta age 2 in the household. ^[5]

1870 Jesse and Mary were enumerated in Crooked Creek, McDowell County, North Carolina. Jesse was 50 years old and working as a farmer.^[6]

Jesse was widowed by the time of the 1880 U.S. Census. In 1880 Jesse was 64 years old and was living with his daughter in Crooked Creek, McDowell County, North Carolina. Jesse was working as a farmer. ^[7]

Peggy Silvers, "Echoes In The Mist", Jesse L. Burgin, 15642, born ca. 1815. Married Mary Drucilla Smith January 18, 1854. I have found little in official records on Jesse. He was a farmer living outside of Old Fort, N.C. Jesse lived at home until his marriage. Then appeared in the 1860, 70, and 80 censuses of McDowell County, as head of the house. Drucilla appeard with him through the 1870 census. She evidently died between the 1870 and 1880. They had one child, Henrietta Elizabeth, who was still living at home, caring for her father in 1880. Jesse died sometime between the 1880 census and 1887. No further information on death dates or burial.^[8]
