Biography

Edward is named among the children of Nathan and Charlotte (Graves) Burton.^[1] He was born about 1824.^[2]

Research Notes

Our primary source lists the children, several of them by initials. The list reads exactly (including punctuation) like this:

"J.G., Elijah, E.B., Edward; Laura, married C.A. Sherman; Mary, married Silas Moore; Fanny, married John Phelps; Jane, married J.H. Guild; ..."

Note that the first four names/initials are male, separated by a comma. The first female name is preceded by a semi-colon, indicating a new phrase is starting. The new phrase lists the female siblings' names, each followed by a comma, followed by the name of their spouse. All that to explain that the "E.B." in the first phrase is a separate person from "Edward" that follows it, even though Edward's middle initial is "B." As further proof, we find E.B. (whose name is Elias Black Burton) living in Manchester during that same census season.^[3]

Other references are, at this point, limited. Edward appears as a family member in 1850, living with other adult siblings in his parents home.^[2]
