Biography

William was born in 1705. He passed away in 1778.

In the name of God amen I, William Caldwell of the township of Fawn, County of York, Province of Pennsylvania being weak in body but of sound mind and memory, blessed by God. I do this day make this my last will and testament in manner following -------------------- Important. It is my Will that after my decese my body be buried in a Christian & decent manner at the digercation of my Executors herein after named. Item. I will that all my just debts be first paid by my Executors Item. I will and Bequeth to my beloved wife Jean the third of my personal estate and Likewise the third of my Real Estate during her widowhood and at the alteration of her widowhood either by death or marriage her part of the Real Estate fully to the two Boys & if any boys dies in there nonage the other is to enjoy their part. Item. It is my will that my wife have all her clothes and a bed and furniture & her sadle Item. I will to my two sons Robert and Samuel my plantation between them. Only Robert is to have forty pounds more than Samuel – Samuel is not to come intill his part til he is of age except the Executors judge it right he should Item. It is my will that the family Lives as Long together as it appears Convenient Item. It is my will that all the Rest of my Personal Estate be equally Divided Between my three Daughters Jannet & Jean & Martha and if any of them Dies in their nonage their share is to be Equally divided between the other sisters above mentioned and that Each of their shares be paid them by the Executors when necessity requires – if there be not as much of the Personal Estate as will make Each of their shares as much as possible I will it be done of the whole Item. I will to each of my Children that is now married the sum of ten shillings that is to say except Catren and her husband I will to them the sum of four pounds & to Margret and her husband ten schillings & to Elizabeth & her husband ten schillings & to Mary and her husband ten shillings & to Isbel & her husband ten schillings. Lastly I do nominate and appoint my wife Jean & my son Robert Executor and Executrix of this my last will here by revoking and making void all former wills by me made confirming this and none other to be my last will and testament in writing whereof I have here unto set my hand and seal this sixteenth day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred & seventy two Wiliam Caldwell (Seal) Signed and sealed & publicly declared in presents of us James Edger James Gordon York County— Before me Archibald MClean Esquire, Register of the Probate of Wills and Granting Letters of Administration in and for the County of York in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Personally came James Edgar and James Gordon the two Subjects being Witnesses to the fore going instrument of Writing and upon their solemn oaths taken with and upon uplifted hand formally say That they were personally present and saw and heard the foregoing or fore named William Caldwell sign his name unto and seal and publish the foregoing instrument of writing as and for his last will and Testament; and that at the time of doing thereof, he the said William Caldwell was of Sound and Disposing Mind and Understanding to the best of their Knowledge and Belief and that they did Respectively subscribe their names thereto as Witnesses in the presence of the Said Testator and at his request Jas Edgar James Gordon Sworn and Subscribed before me at York the 1st Day of March 1779 Arch MClean, Register

I have a typewritten copy of a paper concerning quite a few Caldwells. There is information about the early life of this William. I will send it to a relative who can use it. Noland 588.
