Biography

This profile is part of the Calhoun Name Study.

Malcolm Calhoun was born on 18 August 1823 in Cumberland County, North Carolina, United States, son of John C Calhoun (1788–1842) and Sarah Anne Buchanan (1792–1862).[1]

He would have been the "male age 5 through 9" in his father's household in the 1830 census of Averasborough, Cumberland County.[2]

The family moved to Clarke County, Alabama before 1840. Malcolm would have been the son age "15 through 19" in his father's household.[3]

In 1850, Malcolm was living with his brother John in Clarke county, Alabama. [4]

Malcolm and Elizabeth Cox were married on 28 January 1852 in Clarke, Alabama. Elizabeth was born on 1 October 1830 in Clarke, Alabama. She was the daughter of Abner Cox and Nancy (Chapman) Cox.[5] They had the following known children:

    Malcolm Calhoun was a homesteader in Union Parish, Louisiana. Join the Homesteaders Project.

On 10 May 1854, he acquired 39.6 acres of land in what is now Lincoln Parish, Louisiana from Susannah Gordon, widow of Gabriel Gordon, who had served in Captain Heghee's Company, Alabama Militia.[6] Then on 1 September 1856, he acquired an additional 158.5 acres of land in the same area through a cash sale. [7]

In 1860, Malcom and Elizabeth were living in Union Parish, Louisiana with four children. [8]

He is most likely to be the Malcolm Calhoun who enlisted in the 19th Louisiana Infantry on 11 December 1861 at Camp Moore, Louisiana.[9]
