Biography

Samuel was born in Virginia around 1754 in either Albermarle or Bedford County.

In 1790 Samuel was in Surry County, NC with three sons under 16 and three females (his wife and two daughters?).[1]

In 1800, still in Surry County, he is listed as over 45 along with his wife. Living with them is another man over 45, and four apparent sons and three apparent daughters. (Males: one under 10, one 10-15, two 16-25; Females, two under 10 and one 10-15).[2]

In 1820, Samuel and his wife are both in the over-45 category and living with them are 3 men and a woman, all in the 26-45 age range. [3]

In 1830 Samuel can be found in the Surry County census listed in the 70-79 age range along with his wife also 70-79. Also living with them was a 40-49 year old man and a 20-29 year old woman.[4]

Samuel wrote his will in 1825, but the will was not probated until August 1837. His will leaves money to his daughter Nancy Lackey and land to his sons Ferree, James, John, Samuel Jr, and to his son Isaac's children. John received the homestead "for the maintenance of him & his mother during life." His wife Mary additionally was to have all the stock and household furnishings. Isaac was to have ten shillings instead of the land that went to his sons instead, so he was still alive at the time the will was written.[5]

Research Notes

He may have served in the Revolutionary War. He received at least two land grants in Surry County, NC that may have been bounty land grants. Additionally, a Samuel Calloway appears on a 1779 muster list of the 9th Regiment of Light Infantry of Virginia[6] and also appears in a list of Revolutionary Bounty-Land Warrant Applications.[7]
