Biography

Flora Cameron was born on the Trotternish Peninsula, probably near the port of Uig, on the Isle of Skye about 1777 - 1786. [1] Her age varies across the census, so birth year is uncertain

Flora married Hugh Mckinnon on 5 December 1804 in Tyree, Argyll, Scotland.[2]

___ Cameron married Ewen McKinnon [3] Note marriage is listed as 10 Aug 1786 [4]This may be the cause of some confusion with Hugh / Ewen.

They lived in the Parish of Snizort [5] and later on Croft 1 on Lord MacDonald's Estate lands at Kendram, Parish of Kilmuir. [6]

In the 1841 census Flora (age 55) was in Kendram, Kilmuir, Inverness.[7][8]

In the 1851 census Flora (age 70), Farmer's Wife, was the wife of Eween Mackinnon in Kendram, Kilmuir, Inverness.[9][10]

Flora died in Kilmuir parish in 1870, age 92, b abt 1778[11][12]

Research Notes

Flora's year of birth is uncertain. According to her age at death she was born about 1778. However it is more likely that she was born about 1786, consistent with her age in the 1841 census, as she had a child in 1830.

Flora was born between 1778 and 1786. Her birth place and birth year are both uncertain. In the 1851 Scottish Census, her birthyear is calculated to be about 1781 (born 'in Kilmuir Parish') and in the 1861 Scottish census, born about 1783 'in Snizort Parish'[13].

There was a marriage on 5 Dec 1804 between people with this couple's names, Hugh McKinnon and Flora Cameron, at Tyree, Argyll, Scotland[14] but the venue seems too distant, i.e. not on the Isle of Skye.

Their first son, John is believed to have been born about 1808, based on details given in his Death Record in NSW[15]. A daughter Ann was born about 1812, and daughter Dorcus was born about 1814 and a daughter Catherine was born about 1823.

There is an OPR baptism record, Kendram, Kilmuir, Isle of Skye, for a daughter, Margaret McKinnon, born 1 June 1828, baptised 23 Jun 1828 [16]. There was another son, Angus William McKinnon, baptised 15 May 1830 at Kilmuir by Uig, Inverness, Scotland[17].

Flora died 21 January 1878 from 'gradual decay of old age' at Kendram in the Kilmaluag district of Kilmuir Parish, Isle of Skye, Inverness-shire, Scotland. She was recorded to be 92 years of age, so born about 1786. The informant was Ewen MacLeod, grandson, who signed the register. [18]

Cameron-14891 and Cameron-3494 appear to represent the same person because: Same birth and death years and places; same husband (Hugh=Ewen); Last Surname needs editing to married name 'McKinnon' on one Profile (from maiden name 'Cameron').

Daughter Ann lacks details on each Duplicated Profile to be sure she's another duplication but she may need a follow-up Merge.

I am an Australian descendant of Flora and her husband Ewen MacKinnon who lived their whole lives on Skye but four of their children emigrated to Australia. Four of Flora Cameron's sibs emigrated to Canada. Interestingly, there are now many Cameron descendants, DNA-matched with me, turning up in Australia, New Zealand and North America, as well as in Scotland.
