John Campbell was born about 1763 in Bedford County, Virginia. He was the son of Josias Campbell and Susannah Mitchell.[1]
John married Nancy Jones 28 Sep 1785 in Bedford County, Virginia.[2]
Children of John and Nancy:
On 22 Mar 1796, John bound his son Josiah Campbell to James Mitchell until he reached the age of 21.[3]
John married Rebecca Edwards 7 Jan 1799 in Lincoln County, KY. John Scott signed as a witness.[4] John's son John Campbell married Eleanor Scott on 3 Aug 1802 in Lincoln County, KY.[5]
Children of John and Rebecca:
On 8 Aug 1805, John's son John Campbell was grantee on a Lincoln County, KY deed from his father in law William Scott. On 23 Dec 1805, John Campbell's brother in law John Scott was grantee for land from his father William Scott.[6] This Lincoln County land from William Scott is on Brush Creek and later becomes part of the City of Liberty in Casey County, KY (Casey County is formed from Lincoln County in 1806[7]).
On 4 Nov 1805, John's father Josias Campbell was grantee on a deed for 320 acres on the waters of Chapline in Mercer County, KY from James Brumfield deceased. The deed states "whereas by a certain writing obligatory signed by the said decedant in his lifetime by which he bound himself to convey to the said Campbell three hundred and twenty acres on the waters of Chapline in the said county of Mercer... near a small lick in the land of James Mitchell."[8] The next deed in the deed book is a similar transaction from Brumfield deceased to James Mitchell for land on Campbell's line.[9] It's likely Josias and his family had already been living on this land per this prior arrangement, since he is known to be in Mercer County at least as early as 1792 when he signed his daughter Elizabeth's marriage record.[10]
On 12 Nov 1807, John's father Josias Campbell signed his will and named John and his brother David Campbell as executors.[1]
On 11 Sep 1809, John signed for the marriage of his daughter Susanna Campbell.[11]
On 28 Dec 1811, John noted as executor sold 15 acres on the waters of Chapline. The deed was also signed by John's mother Susanna, widow of Josias Campbell.[12]
On 29 Sep 1812, John and his wife Rebecca sell 137 acres being the plantation on the waters of Chapline where John Campbell now lives next to David Campbell.[13]

John's 3 children through his 1st wife Nancy - John, Josiah, and Susanna, along with their immediate families account for every Campbell in the 1840 census of Liberty, Casey County, KY. Specifically John, Lindsey (John’s son shortly before Lindsey’s death), Josiah, Moses (Josiah’s son), and Susanna (Campbell) Overstreet.[14]
Some online family trees have reported that Rebecca and her children moved to Adams County, IL. The census of 1860 Richfield, Adams, IL, shows David Campbell (KY birth) with his wife and children, along with Rebecca Campbell at age 84.[15] One of David's children in that 1860 census is Sarah Adaline Campbell, who later marries John Forshey.[16] There is a 20cM autosomal DNA match between a John/Nancy descendant (through son John) and a John/Rebecca descendant (through son David's daughter Sarah). The relationship between these 2 test takers would be half 4th cousins once removed.
There are 4 descendants of John Campbell who have taken the BigY-700 Y-DNA test and have terminal haplogroup R-Z9050, combined with unique STR pattern DYS464=15-15-16-16 and DYS714=28
