Oliver was born on 13 June 1857, in Mount Savage, Maryland, to Jacob Caples and Hannah Newton.
[1][2]
In 1860, he was living in Millville Borough, Cambria County, Pennsylvania, with his family.
His father was a puddler.
[2]
In 1870, he was living in Saint Clair Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, with his parents and brother Jacob.
His father was a farmer, who owned $2,200 in real property and $675 in personal property.
[3]
He married Virginia Preall, probably about 1879.
[4]
(The death certificate for Oliver's daughter Stella lists her mother as 'Virginia Pringle', but Stella's marriage record lists it as 'Preall'.
[5][6]
The marriage record is earlier, and Stella may have been the source of her mother's name. Further, searching on Ancestry and FamilySearch (14 April 2021) for 'Virginia Pringle' born in Pennsylvania about 1858 did not find any plausible candidates.)
They had six known children:
Annie Caples (1880)
Rosa Pearl Caples (1881-1904)
Frank L Caples (ca 1884-1888)
Robert Caples (ca 1885-1887)
Oliver Caples (1888-1958)
Estella M Caples (1891-1931)
In 1880, Virginia and Oliver were living in ward 1, Johnstown, Cambria County, Pennsylvania.
Oliver was a laborer.
[4]
The county death records report that Olive Caples (female), 41 years old, died on 12 May 1899, at 1320 Virginia Avenue, Johnstown, of heart trouble.
'Olive Caples' is presumably supposed to be 'Mrs. Oliver Caples'.
That this is the correct family is clear from the address, since Oliver Caples's address in the 1900 census is 1320 Virginia Avenue.
[7]
On 15 May 1899, she was buried in Grandview Cemetery, Johnstown, Cambria County, Pennsylvania.
[8][1][9]
In 1900, Oliver was living at 1320 Virginia Avenue, which he owned, free of a mortgage.
He was a steelworked, and had been unemployed for 0 months.
He was living with his children Rosie, Oliver, and Estella.
[10]
On 5 June 1902, he married Ella Byers, in Johnstown, Cambria County, Pennsylvania.
Oliver was a millhand.
Ella was a domestic.
[11]
In 1910, Oliver and Eleanor were living at 233 Market Street, Johnstown, Cambria County, Pennsylvania.
Oliver was a foreman at a steel mill.
They were living with Oliver's daughter Estella, Eleanor's daughter Susan, and Oliver's sister-in-law Gertrude.
[12]
In 1920, Oliver and Eleanor were living at 233 Market Street, which they owned, free of a mortgage.
They were living with Oliver's daughter Stella and three lodgers.
Oliver was a superintendent at a bone mill.
[13]
On 14 January 1926, Oliver died, at 233 Main Street, Johnstown, Cambria County, Pennsylvania, of angina pectoris, with diabetes mellitus contributing.
On 16 January, he was buried, in Grandview Cemetery, Johnstown, Cambria County, Pennsylvania.
