Biography

Cornelius Carley was born in Brightling, Sussex, England.

Cornelius Carley was born shortly before 31 Oct 1813 in Brightling, Sussex, England to Benjamin Carley and Martha Trash. He was baptised on 31 Oct 1813 in Brightling.^[1]

We know little of his early life. But as he was a shoemaker (cordwainer) like his father, he must have completed a seven-year apprenticeship probably starting when he was about fourteen years old.

Cornelius married Mary Lloyd on 29 Dec 1836 in Wartling, Sussex.^[2] They had four children:

• Elizabeth Carley (1837-1916)
• Charles Carley (1839-1866)
• Ellen Carley (1840-1909)
• Hannah Carley (1842-1929)

They settled in Catsfield to raise their family.^{[3] [4] [5]}

Cornelius Carley died on 20 Jul 1872 in Hastings, Sussex.^{[6] [7]} [At the time of his death, he was generally known as Thomas. See the newspapers article below.] He was 60 years old.
