Biography

Viola was born in 1860. She was the daughter of James Carman and Mary Dew.

She married twice. First to Stephen Frieling Clayton on 12 Feb 1879 in Atchison, Missouri. He was born 29 Nov 1859 in Missouri. He died 23 Jan 1905. He was son of Elizabeth (Ray) and Stephen F. Clayton Sr. Her second husband was Ernest H. Stapels/Staples of Excelsior Springs, Missouri.

Viola and her first husband had at least the following seven children:
Pearl Esta (1880-1957)
Ada L (1884-before 1945)
Ethel Fay (1888-1914)
Claude F (1889-1952)
Harry S (1891-1939) [1]
Fern F (1895-probably young) [2]
Alpha D (1898-1947)
