Biography

James was born in 1773. He was the son of George Carnegie and Susan Scott.

He was baptised on 20 January 1773 at Montrose, Angus, Scotland.

He gained the rank of Captain in the Honourable East India Company Marine Service.

His father died in 1799.

James married Margaret Gillespie (the daughter of John Gillespie) in December 1801:

MARRIAGES
At Mountwhanny, on Monday the 21st inst. James Carnegie, Esq. third son of the late George Carnegie, of Pittarrow, Esq. to Miss Gillespie, eldest daughter of the late John Gillespie, of Mountwhanny, Esq.[1]

They went on to have at least six children.

Sadly his wife died in 1828.

UK Census Event Date 1841: Living with his three daughters Jane, Susan and Isabella, 20 year old Susan Carnegie and eight others at Holly Walk, Leamington, Warwickshire, England. Aged 65.

Occupation: Independent

UK Census Event Date 1851: Living at 31 Marine Parade, St James, Kent, England. Aged 77 and a widower. Also in the household were his unmarried daughters Jane and Susan, his sisters Susan Jane Carnegie and Anne Gordon, niece Hannah Gordon and four servants.

Occupation: Retird Capt C T C Navy

He passed away in 1851 at the age of 78[2]

DEATHS
At Brighton, on the 18th Inst., in his 79th year, Captain James Carnegie, late of the Hon. East India Company's Naval Service, and of 7, Atholl Crescent, Edinburgh.[3]

His last Will and Testament was dated 24 April 1850 and was proved at London on 21 February 1852 by David Carnegie, esquire the son and Jane Carnegie, spinster, two of the Executors.
