Biography
William was born in 1827 in Bedford County, Virginia. He was the son of Littleberry Carter and Nancy Stinnett.
At the age of 22 on 13 Jan 1849 he married Tabitha Frances Stinnett (1833-1901). Tabitha is the daughter of William Stinnett (1804-1879) & Anna Hale-Stinnett (1808-1878). Together they had 5 children:
- Almira Virginia Carter-Coleman (1849-1913)
- Ann M Carter-Welch (1852-1886)
- James Alexander Carter (1853-1901)
- William Berry Carter (1859-1922)
- Martha 'Mattie' Frances Carter-Cottrell (1861-1938)
William S is a Civil War Veteran: Enlisted on 3 Mar 1862 in Bedford, Virginia PVT Co G, 4th Reg't VA Heavy Art'y
On 21 Jun 1863 he left Camp and was listed "At home on sick furlough" .
On 1 Apr 1864 he reported to the Hospital in Lynchburg, Virginia. He died in the hospital on 21 Jul 1864 in Lynchburg, Virginia.
