Biography

William (Carter) Bell is a part of US Black heritage.

William Carter (also enumerated with the surname Bell) was born in July of 1896 in Virginia [his death record provides a birthdate of 6 May 1898], according to his 1900 census record. He was born in Lynchburg, Virginia. His mother was Elizabeth "Lizzie" (Lightfoot) Carter. His father was listed on his death record as Marcellus Bell. (His younger sister, Virginia, also had a father named Marcellus, with various records providing differing surnames of Carter, Pendleton, and Copeland.)

In the 1900 census, William (age 3), was recorded as the son of Lizzie Carter in Lynchburg Ward 1, Lynchburg City, Virginia.^[1]

In the 1910 census, William (age 11), was recorded as the son of Elizabeth Carter in Lynchburg Ward 1, Lynchburg (Independent City), Virginia, United States.^[2]

William registered for the World War I draft in 1917-1918 in Lynchburg, Campbell, Virginia, United States.^[3] He identified as William Bell, gave his birthdate as 3 April 1897, with birthplace Lynchburg, Virginia; he also listed his father's birthplace as Lynchburg, Virginia. He was working at the Canton Sheet Steel Company in Canton, Ohio, at the time of his registration. He listed Lizzie Bell (probably his mother, who may have been using the Bell surname) as his next of kin.

In the 1920 census, William (age 22), Truck Driver, Grocery Company, was recorded as the single son of Lizzie Carter in Lynchburg Ward 1, Lynchburg (Independent City), Virginia.^[4]

In the 1950 census, William (age 50), Grocery Man, was the married head of household in Lynchburg, Lynchburg, Virginia, United States.^[5]

William was working as a laborer in a grocery store at the time of his death. The informant for his death record stated he was single, so perhaps William's wife preceded him in death.

William died on 11 July 1952 in Lynchburg, Virginia.^[6][7] Maude Canter [Carter? his older sister, likely] was the informant for his death record.

William was buried in the same cemetery as his older sister, Lottie: the Old City Cemetery, Lynchburg, Lynchburg City, Virginia.^[8]
