John Carter (42, a wheelwright of Durham), his wife Mary (35), and their children Ellen (12), John William (10), Mary Ann (9), Hannah (8), Robert Henry (6), Richard (4), and Isabella (1) emigrated to New Zealand on the ship "Roman Emperor" as assisted immigrants in 1860, arriving at the port of Lyttelton, near Christchurch.[3]
The Roman Emperor left Gravesend on 01 October 1859, and arrived at Lyttelton on 27 January 1860.[4]
