Isabella's birth was registered in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1858 in the Sunderland district.[1]
John Carter (42, a wheelwright of Durham), his wife Mary (35), and their children Ellen (12), John William (10), Mary Ann (9), Hannah (8), Robert Henry (6), Richard (4), and Isabella (1) emigrated to New Zealand on the ship "Roman Emperor" as assisted immigrants in 1860, arriving at the port of Lyttelton, near Christchurch.[2]
The Roman Emperor left Gravesend on 01 October 1859, and arrived at Lyttelton on 27 January 1860. Isabella was mentioned in the shipping report in the Lyttelton Times on 28 January 1860 in Canterbury, New Zealand. "Deaths on board.--Oct. 8, 1858, Isabella, daughter of Mr, John Carter, aged 20 months..."[3]
