12th Regiment, Alabama Infantry was formed at Richmond, Virginia, in July, 1861. Its members were from Montgomery and Mobile, and the counties of Coosa, Pike, Coffee, De Kalb, Macon, Jackson, and Morgan. During the war, it served under Generals Rodes, O'Neal, and Battle, Army of Northern Virginia. The unit took an active part in the campaigns of the army from Williamsburg to Cold Harbor, fought with Early in the Shenandoah Valley, and saw action in the Appomattox Campaign. In April, 1862, it contained 550 men, lost fifty-one percent of the 408 engaged at Seven Pines, and had 27 killed, 69 wounded, and 33 missing during the Maryland Campaign. Subsequent casualties were thirty-six percent of the 330 at Chancellorsville and thirty-one percent of the 271 at Gettysburg. It surrendered with 5 officers and 62 men.
