The Ragged Islands are not a community, per se, but an area that encompasses town of Lockeport, plus the smaller communities of Osborne, Pleasant Point, Allendale, Little Harbour, Rockland, East Ragged Island, Louis Head, West Middle Sable, Sable River, East Sable River, Little Port L'Hebert, West Green Harbour, East Green Harbour, and West Head.

The Ragged Islands are referred to in early genealogical records. The area was known for shipwrecks, pirates and smugglers, but a handful of New England Planters made their homes here. In 1784, a wave of Loyalists joined the isolated New England Planters to begin forming, and naming the settlements.

It should be possible to categorize modern records into one of the above communities, Shelburne Municipality or Shelburne County.
