Biography

Birth

Norman David Cawelti was the son of David Cawelti and Mary Emeline (Fay) Cawelti of Hueneme, California, with whom he was living at Hueneme in 1900 with his birth date shown as July 1880.^[1] His death record says he was born on 29 Jul 1880.^[2]

Marriage

Norman Cawelti, 27, farmer, and Gertrude Wylie, 19, both of Santa Maria, California, married there on 30 Oct 1907.^[3] In May 1910, Norman and Gertrude Cawelti were living at Santa Maria with a newborn son (name not recorded).^[4] In 1920, the family was living and farming at Cuyama, Callifornia, with three sons, ages four to nine.^[5] In 1930 they were living in Kern County, California, with six children, ages two to 20, and Norman was working as a carpenter for an oil company.^[6]

The marriage ended in divorce, sometime between 1930 and 1935. In the 1940 Census, Norman D. Cawelti, carpenter, was living alone in Kern County, California, with his marriage status recorded as divorced, and Gertrude E. Cawelti was living in Santa Barbara County, California, with three children, ages 11 to 18, with her marriage status shown as divorced, and both were shown living in 1935 in the same place as their 1940 residences.^[7][8]

Death

Norman D. Cawelti died in Kern County, California, on 10 Mar 1967.^[2] His gravestone at the West Side District Cemetery in Taft, California, is inscribed with the dates 1880-1967.^[9]
