James was born in 1806. He was the son of Sterling Chandler and Edith Bryant. He married Sarah Sally Howington in 1825 and they had multiple children together. Their son Bethel fought in the 16th infantry and died around 1863. James appears to have been given some land in the 1827 Georgia Land Lottery, part of the 1802-1832 Government redistribution of lands taken from the Creek and Cherokee Indians: Chandler, James R., (county of residence) Madison County, Christians, (County of land lottery) Muscogee County.
