Biography

John was baptized 18 October 1733 in Wadhurst, Sussex, by John and Susanna (Drawbridge) Chantler, In 1755 he married Constant Cayley in nearby Ticehurst. They had two children in Ticehurst, 1755-1758, two in Burwash 1759-1761, one in Mayfield in 1764, and five in Rotherfield, 1766-1778.

Note

The ten baptismal records for their children are mostly quite uniform ("John and Constant Chantler") but that for son John in Mayfield has "Constance" and "Chaundler." All parishes named are in Sussex, now East Sussex.

Constant Cayley (as “Constans”) was baptized 7 Sep 1735 in Heathfield by Thomas and Mary Cayley, https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NLZF-5ZB. Thomas Cayley of Heathfield and Mary Monday of Mayfield married 26 Nov 1734 in Mayfield, A secondary source (https://www.ancestry.com/search/categories/42/?name=Constant_Cayley&event=_sussex-england-united+kingdom_5287&birth=1735) has Thomas born in 1704 and Mary in 1713. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-D513-QMW. (Her brother Alexander of Heathfield witnessed her wedding in Ticehurst, providing the needed evidence that this is our Constant.)

John Chantler-132 could be the "labourer" buried in Wadhurst 22 April 1787 but that record has also been claimed for John's father John Chantler-100. Among several John Chantlers buried in Sussex perhaps next most likely is one buried 5 January 1826 in Ticehurst "age 81," but our John would be about 92 at that time. As of July 2020 a Ancestry.com profile claims that John Chantler (1737-1812) of Charlwood, Surrey, was the husband of Constant Cayley, but this seems wrong; he was buried in Crawley Borough, West Sussex, in 1819.)
