Biography

Hannah Chantry was born in 1809 in Sneinton, Nottinghamshire, England to Joseph Chantry and Millicent.

Hannah Chantry, daughter of Joseph & Millicent, was christened on 3 Jul 1809 at St Stephen in Sneinton.[1]

Hannah was in a relationship with Samuel Lomas from at least 1828, and they probably married sometime between 1830 and 1835 (no record has been located, so it's possible it was a common-law relationship).

Hannah and Samuel had at least three children:

  1. Henry Lomas Chantry AKA Henry Lomas (1828-)
  2. Samuel Lomas Chantry AKA Samuel Lomas (1830-)
  3. Mary Ann (Lomas) Smith (1835-1872)

All three children were born in Nottinghamshire: Henry & Samuel in Hoveringham and Mary in Carlton. The boys were christened as the illegitimate sons of Hannah Chantry, but both had Lomas as a middle name. Mary was christened as the daughter of Samuel Lomas & Hannah, and Samuel's occupation was noted as publican.

The family moved to Derbyshire in or before 1841.

In 1841 Hannah Lomas (age 30-34) lived at Park St in Derby, Derbyshire with her husband Samuel (30-34), son Samuel (10), and daughter Mary (5).[2]

In 1851 Hannah Lomas (age 41) lived in Derby with her husband Samuel (41, Railway Clerk (Locomotive)), son Samuel (20, Locomotive Fireman), daughter Mary Ann (15), and servant Ann Webster (16, House Servant).[3]

Hannah and her family emigrated to New Zealand in 1859. They sailed aboard the ship Matoaka which sailed from London on 15 Jun 1859 and arrived in Auckland, New Zealand on 26 Sep 1859: Samuel "Somes"[Lomas], with his wife Hannah, and son Samuel Jr.[4] Hannah's married daughter also emigrated with her family.

She passed away in 1868.
