Mary (Charlton) Sullivan is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A110853.

Mary was born about 1722.[1]

Mary first m. an old man, Mr. Johnson, who on his death bed, gave her a silk stocking filled with gold & silver. [2]When she & Charles settled near Louisville, GA., they lived in log cabins with dirt floors & had to dig a pit in one corner of the cabin to store the meat & set a hen (with eggs) over it to keep the Tories & soldiers from stealing it. They would take out a little piece at a time & hang it on the chimney. The Tories would come in & rip up the beds & scatter the feathers over the yard. She had only one pair of cotton cards (for carding cotton) & when she saw the Tories coming, she would hide them under her dress. She was so anxious to keep them to clothe her children. Mary live to 115. At 100, she took to her bed & was known as "granny in the bed."

Mary Charlton married a Joseph Johnson as his second wife. They had no children together. He is said to have promised her that if she married him he would give her a silk stocking full of Gold & Silver. He had been married before and had eleven children. I have a copy of Joseph Johnson's will listing all his children. The will is dated 8 Jan 1761, Proved 3 Mar 1761.

Mary married Charles Sullivant 8 May 1761 in Lunenburg County, Virginia.

Mary died in 1837 at the age of 115 and is buried in Sullivan Cemetery, Berea Heights, Greenville County, South Carolina.[1] Her tombstone transcription is: "Mary Sullivan Sr. Died 1837 Age 115 yrs". [3]
