Biography

Mary Pryor Cheatham was born November 8, 1822, in Elkton, Todd county, Kentucky, a daughter of Major Cheatham and Martha Patsy (Wooldridge) Cheatham. Note: her father's first name was Major, this is not a rank.

Mary was twice married. On September 29 1842, in Montgomery county, Illinois, Mary married Harvey A. Tullis, son of John F. Tullis and Sarah (Howard) Tullis. [1] Children of Mary and Harvey include:

  • Sarah E. Tullis, born July, 1843, in Hillsboro, Montgomery county, Illinois, died March 9, 1879, in Saratoga, Winona county, Minnesota, married Charles L. Blair, in 1858
  • Marin Ann Tullis born in 1844/45, in Donnellson, Montgomery county, Illinois, died September 10, 1918, in Seattle, King county, Washington, married John M. Sisler, in 1863

Harvey died December 29, 1845 and is buried in the Donnellson cemetery, in Montgomery county, Illinois. In 1848, Mary married Stephen Thomas Shields and moved to Winona, Minnesota. Mary and Stephen are found on the United States Census of 1865, living in Utica, Winona county, Minnesota. Mary's father is living in the household with them, as is her daughter, Marin (Tullis) Sisler and her son-in-law John M. Sisler. [2] Children of Mary and Stephen include:

  • John Calvin Shields, born 1852, died 1929, married Sara Lavina Rice
  • Nellie Sifton Shields, born circa 1853, died March 30, 1935, in Bremeteron, Washington, married name Fryett [3]
  • Martha Francis Shields, born January, 1854, died 1934, married 1) Henry Gohrman and 2) William Pevoy
  • Roderick O Shields, born August 29, 1855, died May 19, 1869 at the age of 13 years
  • Benjamin Franklin Shields, born May 30, 1857, died September 21, 1936, married Henrietta Brown [4]
  • Luella Adella Shields, born 1859, died September 24, 1928, married George W. Ross [5]
  • Allie B. Shields, born June 5, 1862, died May 10, 1869, in Ottawa, Le Suer county, Minnesota, at the age of six years
  • Charles H. Shields, born September 16, 1865, died March 2, 1935

Stephen Thomas Shields died May 21, 1896, in Los Angeles county, California and was buried in the Angelus Rosedale Cemetery, there. On the census of 1900, the widowed Mary Shields, is living in Lost Springs, Columbia county, Washington, with her daughter, Luella and her son-in-law, George W. Ross. Mary died September 6, 1907, in Seattle, Washington and is buried in the Lake View Cemetery, there. [6]

Age 84-Seattle, daughter of Major Cheathem, per WA state death records. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, "Pedigree Resource File," database, FamilySearch indicates her name was Martha Mary Prior Cheatem.

In 1857 Winona, MN, Mary Shields (30, KY) was with husband Stephen (34, IN) and Sarah Shields (14, OH), Ann (12, IL), Mary (7,MO), John (4, MO), Martha (3, MO), Roderick (2, MN) and Benjamin (0, MN)

In 1865 Utica, Winona, Minnesota, Mary P Shields was with husband Stephen T Shields, and other Shields: Ellen, John C, Martha F, Major R, Stephen B, Luella A, William W, Ellis B, Charles H.

In 1880 Alfsborg, Sibley Co MN, Mary P Schields (57, KY, parents from VA) was with husband Stiven Schields (57, IN, a farmer, father from Ireland, mother from VA) and sons William W (18, MN) and Charles (16, MN)

In 1900 Lost Springs, Columbia Co WA, Mary P Shields (November 1822, KY, widow) was with daughter Luella A Ross (Feb 1859, MN, father from IN, mother from KY, mother of 9, 5 living), and son-in-law George W Ross (June 1852, KY) and grandchildren Harry M, 19; Mary P, 15; Luella C, 9; Katie L, 5, and William J.B. Ross, 3.

Benjamin F Shields, son of Stephen Shields-Mary Prior Cheatham, died in Seattle on Sep 21, 1936, at age 79; he married Jean Barton.

Pomeroy, Wash -- Sept. 6. -- News was received here today of the death at Seattle of Mrs. Mary P. Shields, and old pioneer of Garfield county. Mrs. Shields settled at Pennewawa, in Garfield county, in 1881, and until a few years ago spent most of her life in this county. Two daughters and four sons survive her. They are: W.W. Shields of Dayton, B.F. and C.H. Shields of Seattle, J.C. Shields of Coos county, Ore., Mrs. G. W. Ross, Waltsburg, and Mrs. Nellie Sifton of Spokane. ["The Spokesman Review", Sept. 10, 1907, Spokane, Washington, Sub. by Robyn Greenlund]

Pryor-1987 and Cheatham-178 appear to represent the same person because: Father is Cheatham. Marriage record says Cheatham. Same find a grave on both profiles.

Cheatham-189 and Cheatham-185 appear to represent the same person because: Both profiles are Mary Prior Cheatham Tullis Shields. She is my 4th Great-Grandmother.
