Margaret Mary Cherubini was born on 21 June 1878 at 12 Cannon St, Dublin. She is the daughter of James Cherubini (a statue-maker) and Mary Anne Doyle. She was baptised the same day at St Nicholas Church, Dublin. [1][2]
Mary Margaret only lived for 18 months. She died on 31 December 1879 at the Meath Hospital, Dublin, from convulsions suffered over a few days. Her death record also states that she suffered from hydrocephalus since birth.[3][4] Her death was registered by her mother the same day. Mary Margaret was buried in Glasnevin cemetery. [5]
Family surname:
The surname "Cherubini" is rare in Dublin in the 19th century, and it appears that the name gradually became corrupted or changed in subsequent generations. Peter's father and this branch of the family seemed to have preferred the spelling "Carabini", although "Carabine" is also found on some records. The variation in spelling probably occurred because of an effort to spell phonetically an unusual name in Ireland.
Civil birth record:
No civil birth record has been found for Mary Margaret (or Margaret Mary) on www.irishgenealogy.ie. Perhaps this was overlooked due to her disability from birth (see above) if she was not expected to live long. Neither has any record been found for either of her names alone, i.e. "Mary" or "Margaret" individually.
Order of her two given names:
In her baptism and burial records, she is named "Mary Margaret". However, on her civil death record she is named: "Margaret Mary". These names may have been interchangeable.
Residence at birth:
One transcript of Mary Margaret's baptism record states the residence as "12 Carmon Street". Another transcript states: "12 Cannon St". There was no street existing named "Carmon Street", so this is likely a transcription error. The death record states that Mary Margaret's address was "11 Canon Street". So they seemed to have moved from No.12 to No.11 during her short life.
An interesting fact about this street is that it was known as Dublin's shortest street! It was situated just off Bride Street near St. Patrick’s Cathedral and was named due to it's proximity to the Cathedral, referring to the Cathedral Canons (members of the clergy). The street disappeared in the late 1960s to make way for the widening of Bride Street.[6]
Father's occupation:
Mary Margaret's father James worked a "statue maker" (or sculptor) like many of his family. James' grandfather Beniamino Cherubini (abt.1780-1849) had come to Dublin from Italy in the early 19th century and established a statue-making business and many of his sons and grandsons followed into this profession.
