Biography

Adam R Clark was born on 10 Jan 1799 in Strong, MA, the eldest son of Richard Clark and Martha "Patty" (Reed) Clark[1]. Note: the name "Adam R Clark" is from his son George's death record[2]. He was converted to Methodism, "together with some other members of the family, during a revival of religion which occurred in the neighborhood in the fall and winter of 1818"[3].

Adam of Strong published his intention to marry Mary Johnson of Vienna, ME on 27 Dec 1826 in Strong[4]. They married soon after as their first child Mary Ann was born on 11 Nov 1827[5].

Adam lived his whole life in Strong, and was recorded in the US Censuses of 1830[6], 1840[7], and 1850[8]. Adam was Town Treasurer of Strong for 8 years (1835-1842), Treasurer for Bounty on Wheat (1838), Town Representative (1843), and Selectman (1845-1846)[9].

He passed away on 9 Jan 1854 from a large facial cancer in Portland, ME, likely under the care of his brother Dr. Eliphalet Clark, and was buried on the family farm (in 1910, relocated to the Strong Village Cemetery)[10][11].

Adam made out a will in Strong on 23 Jan 1852 (with an addendum on 5 Feb 1852), listing his wife Mary, his sons George R & Dennis E, and his daughters Mary Ann (eldest), Caroline M, Nancy C, & Martha R. The will was probated on 1 Mar 1854 in Franklin County, ME[12].
