Biography

Darwin Tuttle Clark was born in October 19, 1839. He was the son of Palmer Clark and Francis Harriett Aldrich. He was a farmer. He married Mary Jane Bradway in 1869. He passed away on October 27, 1924.

Darwin initially lived in Thompson and Pomfret, Connecticut and then resided in Eastford the rest of his life. According to his obituary in 1924, "His early days were spent in Thompson and Putnam, being at one time employed by the Putnam Woolen Company. After leaving the employ of this concern, Mr. Clark was employed on several farms in this locality and about 60 years ago went to Eastford to live and has resided in that place ever since."[1]

  • 1850 - Living with his parents and siblings in Pomfret, Connecticut.[3]
  • 1860 - Listed as living with Lewis Averill as a laborer in Pomfret, Connecticut.[4]
  • 1863 - Darwin has moved to Eastford, Connecticut. In the U.S. Civil War Registration Records ("Consolidated List of persons of Class I, subject to do military service"), he is listed as living in Eastford, with an occupation of laborer.[5]
  • 1869 - Darwin purchases 140 acres of land, a house and two barns from David Keyes in Phoenixville (a section of Eastford). The address of this property is 57 Chaplin Rd.[6] Darwin marries Mary Jane Bradway on March 21, 1869 in Eastford.[7][8]
  • 1870 - Darwin is listed as living in Eastford, Connecticut with his wife. His occupation is identified as a farmer.[9]
  • 1880 - Darwin received 115 acres bordering his current property from the estate of his brother, Nelson, on March 18.[6]. He is listed as living in Eastford, Connecticut with his family, with an occupation of a farmer.[10]
  • 1885 - He is listed as living in Eastford, Connecticut.[11]
  • 1898 - Darwin's father-in-law dies on his farm from being gored by a bull at his property on 275 Old Colony Road in Eastford, Connecticut. Darwin's mother-in-law, Sarah Bosworth Bradway asked Darwin and his wife to move into the house on Old Colony Road and care for her until she died, at which time they could have the house. "Seemed like a good deal as in 1898 Sarah was 80, but she lived another 28 years to be 108 years old." Darwin and Mary and family move to Old Colony Road that year.[6]
  • 1900 - He is listed as living in Eastford, Connecticut with his family, with an occupation of farmer.[8]
  • 1910 - Darwin is living in Eastford with his wife, his son, Charles, and his mother-in-law.[12]
  • 1917 - Darwin is listed in a military questionnaire for Eastford, Connecticut.[13]
  • 1920 - Darwin is still living in Eastford with his wife and his 101-year old mother-in-law.[14]
  • 1924 - Darwin dies on October 27.[15] He is buried in the Grove Cemetery in Eastford, Connecticut.[16][17]

Clark-9976 and Clark-966 appear to represent the same person because: I believe that Clark-966 is the same person as my Clark-9976. Darwin is my 2nd great grandfather, and your information matches our family records and on-line info, particularly hsi marriage to Mary Bradway.
