He was born 19 Feb 1749 at Charlestown; and he died 7 July 1796 at Richmond, aged 55 years 4 months; married 26 Feb 1769 at Richmond, Elizabeth Dodge, daughter of Joseph and Mary Dodge. Mary Dodge was born 19 June 1744 Charlestown; and she died 23 Jan 1826 aged 81 years 6 months 4 days. He received from Jeremiah Worden, of Richmond, a deed of Richmond land, dated 7 Jan 1771; recorded 16 Jan 1771 at Richmond, in which he is called “Joshua Clarke, son of William Clarke.” He left a will dated 10 Dec 1795; proved 1 Aug 1796; recorded 30 Sept 1813; at Richmond, in which he mentions wife, Elizabeth; sons: Rouse, William, Joseph, Wells, Perry, Hazard, Luke and Joshua; as well as daughters: Elizabeth Cross and Susanna and Mary Clarke. He is said to have come from Block Island to Richmond in 1771.

1. ) 2023-06-20: Caution: the identity of this Mary (Clarke) Crandall (1787-1820), daughter of Joshua Clarke is so similar to Mary (Clarke) Crandall (1782-1858), also a daughter of Joshua Clarke (but a different Joshua Clarke), son of Wm, that there is frequent conflation of the two identities. However, the two identities may be absolutely and correctly differentiated by their birth dates. The date of birth on the tombstone of Mary (Clarke) Crandall (1782-1858), wife of Beriah Crandall, is a perfect match for the 3 August 1782 birth date assigned to Mary Clarke, daughter of Joshua and Dorcas (Smith) Clarke, whereas the birth date for the Mary Clarke, daughter of Joshua and Elizabeth Dodge of this profile is affirmed by the Arnold Vital records to have been born on 10 Jul 1787, about five years later.
